What our parents say about FintonaThe music program is of a very high standard.

Music
Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without. Confucius
The Music Department at Fintona provides a stimulating and supportive environment in which students learn to play instruments, sing, compose music, develop critical listening skills and explore the process and artistry of communication through music. Students have an array of opportunities to participate in music including classroom programs, individual lessons, School concerts, House music, guest artists as well as masterclasses and excursions.
The classroom music program supports instrumental lessons and ensemble performance by linking theoretical, aesthetic and creative components and helps students understand the interrelationship of these elements in the construction and interpretation of music. At Fintona, we believe that it is important to develop the whole musician - one who can interpret music with an understanding of the intent of the composer and the culture in which it was conceived, and not just be technically proficient in playing the notes. Composition is an important part of being a well-rounded musician as well as being an important form of musical expression. It is through the process of creating original musical ideas, evolving and structuring them in a logical sequence that young musicians learn critical analysis skills, which are essential for all performers.
Classroom Music Overview
Music studies are a compulsory part of the curriculum from the ELC to Junior School through to the end of Year 8. Students explore music through a program of activities involving performing, creating, listening and evaluating. An understanding of the language of music (music literacy) and ability to respond to musical stimuli is enhanced by aural, theory and analysis exercises. Students learn techniques in music composition and create music focusing on concepts of melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre and texture. In Years 9 and 10, students can continue their musical training through semester-long units in Film Music Composition and Music Performance. VCE Solo Music Performance (Units 1-4) is also offered to those wishing to continue their performance studies at a high level.
