The Duke of Edinburgh's Award
Rewarding initiative, perseverance and commitment
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is an internationally recognised self-development program for young people aged from 14 to 25 years and it has been implemented at Fintona to provide an opportunity for enriching the lives of its students.
The Award presents a balanced, non-competitive and enjoyable program of voluntary activities, which encourage personal discovery and growth, self-reliance, perseverance, responsibility and service to the community.
From age 14 onwards, the Award can be undertaken at three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold, with each level needing a greater degree of commitment. At each level, activities must be completed in four Sections: Physical Recreation, Skill, Service and Adventurous Journey. At the Gold level there is an additional requirement of a Residential Project. Any of the girls who complete a level of the Award is to be congratulated for showing initiative, perseverance, commitment and dedication to completing all sections of her Award over a period of six to nine months.
The rewards for the participants are many, but it is the process the girls go through, the contacts they make with the community, the self-confidence they develop, as well as the fun and memories they create along the way that make the Award program so beneficial to participants. The program is entirely voluntary and each participant is free to choose her own activities within the guidelines, and to progress individually through the various sections of each award level at her own pace.
The Compass Award
Thriving through challenge and achievement
The Compass Award is an opportunity for primary and early secondary aged young people to thrive through selected challenge and achievement. It lays the foundation for achievement of all sections of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. It offers young people aged between 10 and 14 years a framework to thrive in a variety of activities. The program is voluntary, non-competitive and aimed at the individual's interests and abilities.

The Compass Award helps to build confidence and self-esteem and also to foster a positive attitude to formal and informal education and leisure pursuits. The girls choose their own activities, willingly accept the challenges presented and strive admirably to achieve their personal goals.
