Junior School
Prep to Year 4
Welcome to our Junior School!
Fintona's Junior School is a warm, safe and friendly environment where each girl is welcomed, valued and respected. Our Junior School embraces the vital early years of schooling from Prep to Year 4 where the foundations for all future learning are laid.
The girls engage in a wide range of relevant and challenging learning opportunities. Through the Primary Years Program of the International Baccalaureate Organisation, the students discover the joy of learning through a rigorous and challenging curriculum of an international standard. There are daily opportunities for the girls to engage in experiences where they are encouraged to be curious and ask questions as well as explore and interact with their environment physically, socially and intellectually.
Literacy and numeracy skills acquisition are vital during these early years and our small classes enable teachers to cater for the individual needs of all our girls. The Specialist Program sees our specialist staff working to expand the experiences and skills of our girls in the areas of Art, Drama, French, Library, Music, Outdoor Education and Physical Education.
We value the connection between home and school and we see families as a vital part of their daughter's education. At the end of each day the Courtyard is filled with parents, staff and girls reflecting on the day. There are many opportunities for families to be involved in the life of the Junior School.
The Junior School is equipped with large, attractive, light-filled learning spaces surrounding a landscaped Courtyard. Girls enjoy using the Library, Art Room, Music Room and Multi-Purpose Hall, and plans are underway for the building of a Language Room. Technology is an integral part of the Junior School, with computers and Interactive whiteboards in all classrooms. The playground, recently redesigned by Andrew Laidlaw, who also designed the Children's Garden at the Royal Botanic Gardens, provides a natural environment with winding pathways leading over mounds and through plantings to special areas for the girls to explore. Cubby houses, sand pits and climbing equipment provide further opportunities for creative play. Our newly planted vegetable gardens are now delivering their first tasty produce.
Miss Margaret Cunningham, Principal of Fintona (1936-1962), was often quoted as saying, ‘Learning and happiness are just two sides of the same thing' and I know she would be delighted to witness what is happening in her school today.
Our Junior School teachers and I look forward to meeting you very soon.
