What our parents say about FintonaI have been very impressed with the overall standard of teaching and support. Teachers appear happy to be there, enjoy the students and take a genuine interest in their welfare.

Middle School
Years 5 to 8
Welcome to our Middle School!
In the Middle School at Fintona, we aim to encourage each girl to feel safe and supported at this critical stage, to test her skills, explore new relationships with her peers and continue to reach her academic peak.
We have developed a Middle School that embraces not only an understanding of the enormous changes our students undergo during this stage, but is flexible enough to recognise that those changes are as varied in their onset and development, as the many girls who make up the Middle School.
In the Middle School, girls mix not only with their individual year level, but with girls throughout the Tourmont Campus in House participation, Assemblies and a myriad of other activities. This encourages a strong sense of community, positive interaction with younger and older girls and a strong sense of identity as a Fintonian. It also encourages all girls to be active decision makers. Younger girls are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves and their behaviour and learning, and older girls are aware of the role modelling they represent along with the nurturing and mentoring that is required by having younger students around them.
The class sizes are small for close interaction and genuine collaboration. There is a strong recognition of the individual and real opportunity for development, both academically and socially. The House system encourages strong participation and provides opportunities for leadership as do the many co and extra curricula activities offered in the Middle School. Students entering the Middle School are equipped with strong skills through the PYP and Year 7 and 8 programs to support them in their journey through the senior years. A focus on literacy and numeracy, a creative approach to tasks and problem solving and co-operative and collaborative approaches are all encouraged. Curiosity is encouraged as students learn in an environment where enquiry is valued. Skills associated with finding and using information effectively, analysing and problem solving and communicating ideas and information are further developed.
The pastoral care in the Middle School recognises the special needs of students navigating adolescence, and apart from a purpose designed Life Skills program, a detailed transition program and a warm and personal relationship with staff, learning support and counselling are also available for students and parents. Students in Year 12, with the guidance of the Year 12 Middle School Consul, develop activities that allow mentoring and encourage cross age interaction.
