Senior School Programs
Years 9 to VCE
A time of achievement and personal growth
The academic programs in the Senior School are rigorous and engaging where girls are encouraged to question and participate in their own learning. In the classrooms, opinions are discussed while respecting the rights and beliefs of others. The aim of our dedicated teachers is to prepare each girl for VCE success but also to foster a solid set of values and a strong sense of self-worth to ensure a smooth transition to tertiary life and beyond.
Years 9 and 10
In Year 9, students participate in the Connections Program, specifically designed to allow students to develop greater awareness of themselves and their community. All students in Years 9 and 10 study English, Mathematics, Physical Education and Science. Year 9 students are required to continue with at least one language other than English (French, Indonesian or Japanese). Accelerated Mathematics and Advanced Science courses are available to selected students at Year 9. A selection process exists for involvement in both programs. Maintaining a breadth to their learning program is valued, and all students will continue with their studies in Humanities and the Arts. Students enjoy the opportunity to select subjects that are semester based. Commerce and Information Technology based subjects are available. The majority of subjects in the Arts and Humanities are offered to students in Years 9 and 10, with a small number being offered in Semester 2 to Year 10 students only. Talented music students may be able to commence their VCE Music studies at this stage: the appropriateness of such study is determined on an individual basis.
Year 11 and VCE
A broad range of VCE subjects is offered, with some subjects being offered every second year, ensuring students can focus on specific areas of interest. (Drama and Theatre Studies are offered in alternate years, along with Health and Human Development and Physical Education.) A number of students will commence their study of Unit 3 and 4 subjects (Year 12) in Year 11. Individual guidance is provided by the VCE and Careers Co-ordinators to all students prior to their commencement of, and throughout their VCE years.
During this stage of their educational journey, girls benefit enormously from open discussions with experts and their peers on a range of issues relevant to their particular stage in life. Through Fintona's Life Skills program, girls discuss areas of interest such as physical changes, building personal relationships, healthy lifestyle, stranger danger, emerging individuality and relationships with family and friends, drugs, emerging sexuality, conflict resolution, and the cyber world.
Resource Centre
The Senior School Resource Centre staff encourage students to enjoy and develop an appreciation of literature as well as to explore a variety of genres. All staff and students have access to a wide range of print and online resources that support the research requirements of our academic programs. Comprehensive cataloguing is provided on ‘Oliver', the School's catalogue, which is available on computers throughout the school. The Resource Centre staff members provide a personal approach and are able to assist all students with their research needs.
