Languages at Fintona
Bienvenue, Selamat dating, Yokoso
At Fintona, the study of languages is a key feature of our extensive curriculum. Our Language Other Than English (LOTE) program seeks to promote enjoyment of language studies, an appreciation of other cultures and an understanding of the relevance and importance of languages. We are fortunate to be able to offer our students the choice of three languages other than English - French, Indonesian and Japanese. These three languages have been carefully chosen to provide access to a major world language of diplomacy and culture, the language and culture of our nearest northern neighbour and the language and culture of one of Australia's major trading partners.
From Prep to Year 6, all girls study French. In Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 French classes integrate with units being covered by the Primary Years Program (PYP) where possible. In Years 3 to 5 girls are introduced to the innovative Histoires en Action program which uses stories and music as the context for language acquisition. Vocabulary is delivered through a highly effective kinaesthetic approach termed ‘The Gesture Approach'. The program pushes students to higher levels of fluency in both oral and written French as they progress through the stories. In Year 6, students are prepared for more intensive language study. The textbook based approach, which all languages incorporate from Year 7, is introduced.
In Year 7, two languages are studied. All students study French and then make a choice between Indonesian and Japanese, both of which are continued into Year 8. In Year 9 all girls must choose at least one of the languages they have studied in Years 7 and 8 and, if they wish, they may continue with both. In Year 10, most girls study at least one language but this is not compulsory.
All three languages are available as VCE subjects and all three are popular choices for our students, with excellent results being achieved at Year 12. French students enjoy the benefit of an assistant program, which provides support for students in Years 10 to 12 and aims to enhance conversational skills and cultural understanding.
Languages are highly valued both at Fintona and in the wider community and can lead to broadened employment opportunities and additional benefits later in life. All language studies at Fintona focus on students developing communicative skills in the languages they study, as well as a deeper appreciation of the intricacies of their own language. They are also encouraged to put their skills into practice actively in both created and authentic situations. Increasing awareness and understanding of other cultures is a prominent feature of our courses, and students do not simply speak the languages they learn, they ‘live' them.
