Middle School

Years 5 to 8 - a time of change and new beginnings.

At Fintona, we understand that the Middle School years are a time of many changes....and new beginnings.

Many girls experience Fintona for the first time in the Middle School. With our specially designed transition programs, and the support of our staff, Fintona girls are excited by the new possibilities and opportunities.

There are new friends to make, new school grounds to explore and a challenging curriculum that will stretch each girl's ability. Many warm personal relationships develop during the girls' Middle School years.

Our small class sizes contribute to our academic success as well as encouraging close interaction and genuine collaboration between students and teachers.

Middle School students enjoy their own specific building, Moss House, where girls can interact during recess and lunchtime and participate in a variety of clubs depending on their interests.

Our Life Skills program allows students to learn from experts in health, drugs, emerging sexuality, relationships, cyber safety and study skills. A Study Skills program provides strategies to guide students with organisation and time management.

Drama, Music, Sport, Outdoor Education and Leadership opportunities add further richness and breadth to the Middle School curriculum by providing experiences that build self-esteem and allow deeper friendships to be formed.

By the end of the Middle School years, girls feel enthusiastic about their learning and are solidly prepared for the demands of the Senior School.

All classes are conducted on the Senior School Campus.

Co-curricular

Important learning occurs beyond the traditional classroom and Middle School students are offered a wide range of activities to develop their interests. With opportunities to participate in debating and public speaking, music ensembles, choircommunity service, the Compass Award as well as many clubs, there is something wonderful to experience for every girl.

Outdoor Education

The Outdoor Education program aims to extend students beyond their comfort zone by placing them in environments different from their everyday life. Middle School camps begin in Year 5 where girls spend four days in Gippsland. In Year 6, the girls enjoy a three day beach experience at Anglesea Recreation Camp and study marine life, as well as surf and bike ride.

Year 7 girls participate in a Central Australian trip where they camp and immerse themselves in Indigenous culture. In Year 8, girls travel to Charnwood for a five day camp in the bush.

Wellbeing

The wellbeing of our students is of paramount importance to our staff. Teachers, Tutors, House teachers, the Head of Middle School and the School Counsellor work together to support students, maintain a happy school atmosphere and create a safe environment where each girl is valued and respected.

Leadership

Leadership forms an important part of the Middle School curriculum. The Middle School Leadership Program  and the Student Representative Council positions provide opportunities for students to take on positions of responsibility.

House

The girls in the Middle School are placed in one of six houses and participate in activities such as Sport, Debating, Drama and Music.

Scholarships

Fintona offers various scholarships into a number of year levels beginning in the Middle School.
