TOM success

30 August 2015

Three teams of students competed in the Metro Central Division of the Tournament of Minds Competition at Deakin University, Sunday 30 August. One Primary Team competed in the Language Literature Division and two teams (one Primary and one Secondary) of students participated in the Social Sciences Division of the competition. Students worked enthusiastically and collaboratively to present their creative solutions to a panel of judges, scoring points for addressing specific criteria.

In the lead up to the competition, students were involved in a variety of tasks, including researching, writing scripts, constructing props and costumes, directing rehearsals, etc. The focus is on creative thought processes and the students directing themselves in responding to the challenge. At Deakin University, students also participated in a Spontaneous Challenge, which involved the students in clearly responding to a previously unseen problem, with only four minutes to prepare their answers.

This year has been another successful year in the competition, with students demonstrating great teamwork, eagerness and ingenuity. In particular, the students showed the confidence to showcase their various talents.

A special congratulations to both the Language Literature team for receiving Honours and the Primary Social Sciences team who won their division, consisting of fifty other teams from schools in surrounding areas. This group are invited to represent Fintona Girls’ School in the upcoming State Finals at La Trobe University.

Thank you to the support of the parents, especially as encouraging members of the audience at Deakin and Mrs Chandler who facilitated the Secondary team of Year 7 and 8 students.
