Every year, all students from Year 6 to 11 participate in the Elizabeth M. Butt Public Speaking Competition. The program was the vision of Miss Butt, Headmistress from 1963 to 1992, who felt that Fintona girls should be equipped with the skills to communicate with poise and confidence when, as young women, they take their place in community life. The program is staged in three tiers, Years 6 and 7 (Informative), Years 8 and 9 (Persuasive) and Years 10 and 11 (Interpretive). In class, each girl researches her topic and presents her speech.
The 2018 overall winner, Grace Hordern, spoke passionately to assembly about voyeuristic entertainment, highlighting past and present examples and touching on the selfie generation. Read her speech here.
