It is hard to imagine what it would be like to live in a monoculture, given that the majority of us have only ever lived in the multicultural society Australia has become. The real liberation of Australia in the sense of embracing cultural expansion commenced with the abolishment of the White Australia Policy in 1973, under the Whitlam Government; with people from over 200 countries having immigrated to our shores since that time.

In a recent brainstorming exercise, Senior Campus students were asked to write down words that described and defined their experience of being a Fintona student. They offered a wide vocabulary which included, but is not limited to: Understanding, supportive, community, teamwork, strength, empathy, encouragement, acceptance, friendship, safety, belonging, and respect.

Usual, typical, and expected are words used to define ‘normal’. These are not words that evoke excitement. However, all things are relative, and having experienced a school year in 2022 that was significantly more predictable, and steadier compared to prior years, this provided a sense of ‘normal’ which was most welcome.
