What does your role as Network Administrator involve?
As the network administrator, I help build, maintain and monitor the day-to-day IT infrastructure of the school which includes laptops, computers labs and servers. I also look after the software side of things like the programs installed on school devices and system for the file storage, email and user accounts for everyone at the school. Providing technical support to students, staff and parents is also a big part of my job, but my day-to-day tasks are a bit of everything.
Can you describe the educational journey that got you to where you are today?
I’ve always had a deep interest in computers and technology. I went to university to study computer science (programming) but ended up moving into network administration. In the IT world there is always ongoing training to keep on top of new technologies and best practices, including new innovations such as AI and cybersecurity.
What initiatives or projects have you helped implement at the school?
I regularly help with the Fintona Tabletop Gaming Club, where students meet up at lunchtimes to play traditional board games and roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons. The IT service desk has been given a bit of personality with puzzles and word games for students to check out when they visit, and the IT department regularly decorate the area for holidays and special events. I was also a part of the haunted house at Fintona Festival in 2024, helping to design and build it, as well as take on a role of a wacky mad scientist on the night.
Do you have any hobbies, passions, special interests, etc?
I’m a big gamer, whether it’s video games, boardgames or roleplaying games. In my spare time, I watch horror movies and play a lot of Dungeons & Dragons – it’s great to sit in a room with friends and be heroic and silly. I also love to travel with my partner, visiting new countries, trying the food and seeing the sights.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
For a long time, I wanted to be a palaeontologist after I saw Jurassic Park as a child. As I got older, I wanted to become a pilot. I enjoy going on planes but no longer want to fly them.
