The importance of a natural cultural fit
Ensuring a school is the right cultural fit for your child: a principal's perspective by Rachael Falloon.
Rachael Falloon, Principal of Fintona Girls’ School shared her perspective in The Saturday Age ‘Open Days and Special Events Guide’ about the importance of a natural cultural fit for your child when searching for a school.
Rachael shares useful questions for parents to ask and encourages families to ‘see the school in action’.
‘Finding the right cultural fit for your child can be a lengthy process. Do not be afraid to ask questions; see the school authentically in action; and attend school events. You will see the school’s values, diversity and sense of culture on display which will help your family get a feel as to whether the school is right for your child and you.’
In the article Rachael encourages families to visit the School on a Tour or Open Morning during ‘normal hours of operation’ so that they can see the school authentically. She also says to notice and observe interactions between staff and students, and students with each other. Finally, she urges parents to ‘speak not only with the Senior Leadership Team to gather information, but also to the students and other members of staff.’
‘One thing I love about Fintona is the way our girls celebrate each other’s achievements and wholeheartedly encourage each other. It is not about the individual, it is about what we can achieve together. The students at Fintona never cease to inspire me in this regard.’
